quick & easy photo editing tips!

hello old friends!
it's been awhile since my last post, hasn't it?

since last month we have enjoyed every last drop of our summer & have now started school again!

don't you think that went by way too fast? ;)

thank goodness i have all the photos i took of everything from vacations to everyday playtime, or else i probably wouldn't remember!

i love taking pictures... editing them, on the other hand, is something i don't love!
i'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to adobe photoshop or any other elaborate editing program & i just don't have the time (or patience) to learn.

i'm sure a lot of you busy mommies feel the same way, and i get a lot of questions on how i edit my photos & get them to have that "vintage wash" effect with the rounded corners.
i use www.picnik.com and i absolutely love it... it's easy, fast & free!

i'm going to walk you through a few steps on which "actions" i use so you can see how easy it really is:

let's start with a regular photo:

*go to the top of the page & click the "create" tab.
you will see all the actions on the left.
*scroll down until you see the "cross process" button.
*click & adjust the slider to your desired look. i usually slide it anywhere from about 45-75%.
*hit apply
your photo should look something like this:

*now, find the "vignette" action (still to the left of the page) & click.
*slide your percentages to desired strength or leave as it is & hit apply.
*for this photo i used: size-50, strength-40%, & fade-20%.
this is what it looks like:

*next, go back to the side actions & click on "1960's" button.
*adjust slider to desired look (i adjusted mine to 90%), hit apply
you should have something that looks like this:

*now, for the final steps you can leave as it, or you can go to the "edit" tab on the top of the page & fade your colors a bit:

perfect!

*or, for a more "grainier" effect, go back to the "create" tab and choose the "cinemascope" action on the left. then uncheck the "letterbox my photo" square.
it should look like this:

some of my other favorite "actions" to use are "lomo-ish" (for more vibrant color) & also "orton-ish" (for a softer look).
there are lots of fun effects to try, and the more you get used to the format of the site, the easier & faster it will become.

i get a lot of e-mails asking about my blog design & if i did it myself...i did :) with the little html & digital design knowledge that i have. it's not hard once you get the hang of it. i have photoshop & all those fancy editing programs on my iMac, but honestly, i don't even know how to use them.

in my next post have some stuff i wanted to share about blog design how-to's & links that will help you. so if you have any specific questions pertaining to my blog or projects or anything, please post in the comments section. that way it will be easy for me to keep track of. e-mail gets overwhelming for me sometimes & i think (so i've been told) that some of them don't even come through.

how did i get that yellow border around the edge of my layout, you ask?

i punched around the edge using a fiskars vine border punch and then crocheted a very crooked scallop border.

she does these amazing henna designs & i knew that i wanted to scrap these photos as soon as i saw them.
i left a blank, lined spot for her to journal if she wanted to.

one of the many e-mails i have gotten lately.

i am here & quite well actually, just a little blog lazy ;)
i'm so sorry, especially since some of you were waiting for me to announce the winner of my RAK drawing.

...and i don't even know if anybody still reads this anymore, but here's the scoop:

you may have noticed the little kenner road blinky up at the top :)
i was guest designer in january & kl asked me to stay as a regular design team member :)
this made me happy & of course i excitedly obliged!

here are my projects for february with the gorgeous featherweight kit:
a little, baby wall hanging i made for a friend.
(made from a vintage kid's golden book cover

another wall hanging:
the backround is cut out from an old board game box.
i love old cardboard :)

and a little doll i made for my franki-sue with those
awesome industrial bobbins that come with the kit:
to make the torso, i just wrapped a little bit of batting around the bobbin with tulle, and then covered it in ribbon & paper pieces.

her head is made from an old plastic Christmas tree ornament covered in embroidery floss for her hair with a piece of doily for her hat.

hmmmmmm......
all of the detail explaining kind of doesn't make any sense.
i think i feel a tutorial coming on ;)

i was also busy making stuff for winter CHA with the beautiful new chatterbox products:

how are you?

i am having a very splendid new year so far:

we rang in 2009 with a (sort of) quiet new year with the monkeys throwing
those little popping things outside:

i love everything about it!

this is a little wall hanging that i made with the kit...so much fun to play with!

and we've enjoyed every bit of it!

i'm actually quite proud of myself, lol.

i am NOT a digi/computer savy girl, so this was quite an accomplishment!

i wanted to share a few sites & links that i found that might help you beautify your blog, too...

this site: simply fabulous blogger templates is a wonderful (most of them are free!) place to find some pretty (easy to install) templates.

and this site: widget box is where i found my Bible verse scripture thingy.

they also have tons of other fun things like games & drawing tools that you can install as a widget!

they wanted us all to make cupcakes.

i used their papers & the "artsy-licious" line of embellishments topped with some martha stewart glitter:

the last month has been a whirl-wind.

*my pc died.

my awesome sweetie came home with a new apple computer.

so you can say i am truly fruity, now.

*the kids just got out of school.

no more waking up early!

we had a pool party with all her little friends.

my brain is fried from the last few days, and my camera died, so i have nothing to show for it.

but it was so nice to meet y'all (said in my best nashvegas voice).

♥ have you seen this?:
it's "the romantic" by my girly,
and i just got it in the mail today!
it's absolutely GORGEOUS!
i'm about to play with it as soon as i get of this darn computer.

♥ we went to lake tahoe last week with some of our closest friends, and the only photos i got were of the kids jumping off the beds in the hotel room.

♥ little league season is upon us:

the kids have been on spring break & we have been enjoying every minute of it!

♥we spent Easter at grandma's house.
♥took the kids to see horton hears a who
♥my franki sue got her ears pierced & her first tooth fell out!
♥we got the movie enchanted and proceeded to watch it 3,627 times.
♥received an awesome rainbowlicious package from this girl
♥the kids & i met this girl in san francisco & had a blast.
♥i scrapped ALOT.

a good week it was!

all over my floor.
how is this different from usual, you ask?

oh, it's a lot worse than usual...
paper, boxes, buttons, ribbon everywhere.
i'm "trying" to re-do my scrap space (a very limited corner in our house)

so, in order to get everything to fit just right, i am PURGING!
why should you care, you ask?
because that means i have lots, and lots, and did i say LOTS?... to give away!
most of it is new, the other stuff is like full boxes of chipboard letters with just a couple missing.

we're almost over with this ghastly flu!
i slept in until noon today...it felt soooo good.
we've all had it bad...all 4 of us.
no more skipping flu shots for this year, big mistake, but i've learned my lesson.

they range from being afraid of the "popping" sound that the biscuits make when they come out of that stupid can to being almost obsessed about having a 3-column blog.

i fixed the latter one.
lisa is very happy about that.
(the third person talking would be another issue)

...and you know what else bugs me?
the telemarketers that call my house every 5 minutes.
and when you're watching tv with the volume normal & then the commercials come on and the noise blasts through your house.

i also have issues with rambling.

let me explain:
every week her (kindergarten) class learns a different letter, and part of their homework assignment is to cut out pictures (from magazines/catalogs) that corresponds to that letter.

this week was "L".
